Bismuth is a dense, brittle metal, with the unusual property of expanding instead of contracting when it solidifies. 

Bismuth bars range from a silvery white color to having brilliant golden, pink, purple, blue, or green toning from oxidation during the cooling process.  The color of the bar depends upon the temperature of the metal when it is poured, how quickly it cools, and the composition of the atmospheric air around it.
